Climate action begins by acknowledging where your organisation stands regarding climate change and setting climate goals. Then, you need to allocate the resources needed to achieve these targets. To be successful, your organisation needs both the management and employees to commit to your climate work.

According to research by Spark Sustainability in 2022, most Nordic sustainability leaders consider personnel engagement and sustainability competence the most significant bottleneck to climate work in their organisations. Finding effective ways to empower employees to participate in the organsation’s climate work and to boost climate competence is key to reaching climate goals. However, many organisations need help with including employees in their climate work.

This leads to a question: what are the best ways to engage employees in the organisations’ climate work?

‍

A short guide to employee engagement  in reaching your organisation's climate goals

‍

Empowering employees to adopt a sustainable mindset and engage in climate action has various advantages for organisations, but getting there calls for a mindset reboot. However, it's worth it, as the work needs to be done to follow the climate strategy, bring added value,  and maintain a competitive advantage.

Looking at the bigger picture, employees engaging in climate action at the workplace create a positive loop of influencing others — ultimately changing the way businesses operate and affecting policy-making, cultural norms, and future generations.

How can climate work be brought closer to the everyday life of employees?

Often, employees are simply left out of an organisation’s climate work. Here are five potential solutions to increasing employee engagement:

‍

  1. Make the organisation's climate actions visible to the workplace and the outside world. Before employees can participate, they need to be kept in the loop about what’s being done. That way, they understand how important sustainability issues are to your organisation, and can contribute with their own ideas.
  1. Make climate learning part of everyday work. Educate, encourage and help your management and employees adopt climate-smart working methods by, for example, sharing educational materials and implementing supportive policies. You can take your climate work to the next level by identifying and empowering potential climate leaders across the organisation.
  1. Link employees' financial incentives to ESG goals. Motivate your management by tying their financial incentives to climate objectives.
  1. Organise events or seminars related to climate change. Educated employees are aware of the organisation's goals and how they relate to climate change, which leads to better business decisions, innovation and work processes that make more sense in terms of the climate.
  1. Arrange sustainability campaigns that encourage climate action and make a lasting impact. Increase awareness of climate change and help employees understand what it takes to decrease carbon emissions in your business context. Engaging employees in climate work fosters learning and accelerates the organisation's sustainability journey. Spark Sustainability can help you arrange a successful campaign — read more here.
